What to Include in Wedding Invitations

Your wedding invitation is more than just a piece of paper—it’s the first impression of your special day and a key communication tool for your guests. Including the right details ensures your loved ones know everything they need to celebrate with you. Here’s a guide on what to include in your wedding invitations.

The Couple’s Names

The highlight of the invitation! You can share your full names (so there’s no confusion) or just your first names. Traditionally, the bride’s name appears before the groom’s, but modern invitations allow for flexibility.

The Date and Time

Include the full date and time of your wedding ceremony. For example:

  • Formal: “Saturday, the twenty-fifth of May, two thousand twenty-six, at half-past four in the afternoon”

  • Casual: “Saturday, May 26, 2025, at 4:30 PM”

Make sure to specify if the ceremony will be held in the morning (AM), afternoon/evening (PM).

The Venue Details

Provide the full name and address of the wedding venue. Include additional details like the county or postcode to help guests plan their travel.

  • Example: “Banburry Church, 123 Wedding Lane, London, W1 3ab”

If the reception is at a different location, include that information as well.

  • Example: “Reception to follow at Banburry Hall, 321 Wedding Lane, London, W1 2ab”

RSVP Information

Make it clear how and when your guests should RSVP. Include:

  • Example: ”Please RSVP by June 1st, 2027”

Include a pre-addressed RSVP card with postage or provide an email address/website for online responses.

Dress Code

If you have a specific dress code, such as “Black Tie,” “Cocktail Attire,” or “Beach Formal,” mention it on the invitation.

Additional Inserts

To keep your main invitation elegant and uncluttered, consider including a separate details card for essential extra information, such as:

  • Venue Directions: Handy for out-of-town guests or venues that might be tricky to find.

  • Parking: Places to park close to the venue and/or any parking restrictions that may apply.

  • Taxis: Details of any local taxi firms and when to book (especially if the venue is remote and taxis need booking in advance).

  • Gift Preferences: Politely share your registry details or mention if you’d appreciate contributions to a honeymoon fund.

  • Accommodation Options: Recommend nearby hotels.

  • Adults-Only: Gently inform guests if your wedding will be a child-free event.
